Some diggin

August 8th, 2008

I sometimes have to remind myself of the pure joy I have working in this medium. I’ve been coming off of a buzz set afire by Randy Pausch’s book and podcast titled “The Last Lecture” So I thought I would post a bit about my childhood dreams and goals, enjoy…

Signs you work at an animation company

August 8th, 2008

I saw this list posted years ago, I remember laughing so hard I teared up, few things do that. I again thought of it today read it, and it seems to have only gotten funnier with time and experience. I don’t know who the original author is to give them due credit, I think it was circulated through email back in the day. I found it again on http://www.psyc3d.com/content/signs-you-work-at-an-animation-company

So enjoy a posting of something that brings a smile to my face and inspiration to my heart.

Pair-O-Docs (Redux)

August 5th, 2008

So the summer has blurred by. Countless amazing days have gone by undocumented and I’ve had a whirlwind of great stuff happen in my life. Today I finally sit poised to do a bit of focusing. This blog has sat neglected far too long, and as bloggers will sometimes find themselves in, I’m attempting to reclaim that addicting steam-full stride that gets me to write each day or at least on a fairly regular basis.

It’s my vested intent, that, in this day of digital chaos I want use my blog as a mechanism of reflection and personal growth, a daily meter of the days triumphs over inactivity, a journal and map of things to come. The new tone for this blog hasn’t been really set since my first post in December of 2002 (yikes!) but that changes today. This is a digital age and I am a geek and I intend to embrace it.

In the past I relished the thought of writing, and it was this anticipation that would keep my brain in a mode of absorption and reflection all day. Today it was the thought and realization that I need to return fully to the roots of why I fell in love with the world of computer animation.

I’ve soaked in so much knowledge but haven’t had the turn-around of projects I would expect of myself. In the book “The War of Art” I read the closer something is to your heart, the more you’ll fear it and the more resistance you’ll experience in trying to pursue whatever is held so closely. Makes sense to me. If your not good at what you strive to do, where does that leave you? It can be a catch 22. How can you get over a fear of failure, especially when your bliss is at stake? Factoring in I’m a perfectionist and the problems worsens severely. Today I’m casting aside the barriers of resistance. I’m approaching this completely anew, as I did my drawing classes. I snuck up on myself, realized I just enjoyed it and spent time practicing. Like you would if you wanted to get good at the piano, you need to practice! So, to that, I’m jumping back into that special part of my heart that holds my love of character animation. My goal is simple, study yes, but far far more important PRACTICE! I’m telling resistance to take a hike! I realize hard-work and determination are my strengths so for the first time, I’m turning those strengths inward towards my goal of becoming a character animator.

Plot-Pointed!

May 4th, 2008

Me and my friends Dan and Matthew met to discuss our entries for the 11 second club, threw around a few ideas. Nothing really has jumped out at me yet, I know whatever idea I’m going with this month I’m going to really push the subtle stuff, really make the characters pensive. We’re throwing ideas back and forth on Celtx (awesome piece of scriptwriting software) I plan to break down the phrases and get some thumbnails up tomorrow. Read the rest of this entry »

Full of life/A Full life, Ollie Johnston

April 15th, 2008

Ollie Johnston, the last of Disney’s legendary group of animator’s known to the world as the “Nine Old Men” passed away today at the age of 95. It’s always sad to hear news of one of the “Greats” passing, especially someone like Ollie, but I never frown. I know that future generations will get to know people like Ollie through the characters they breathed life into. Characters that were brought to the world with a medium they loved, a medium they pushed truly into the realm of art.
